The U.S. Maritime Administration (Marad) has awarded two ship scrapping contracts to Allied Defense Recycling LLC (ADR), a new ship scrapper that is setting up shop in the former Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Petaluma, Calif.

The contracts, valued at $3.1 million, will require ADR to dismantle two vessels, the SS Solon Turman and the SS President. Both are moored at the federal agency's "Ghost Fleet" anchorage in Suisun Bay, Calif. Both ships are scheduled to be towed from Suisun Bay to ADR in December.....
