Russel Metals reaches deal with USW

Following protracted and often contentious negotiations, Russel Metals Inc. has reached a new labor deal with the United Steelworkers (USW) union in British Columbia, a company official told AMM.

Marion Britton, vice president and chief financial officer of the Mississauga, Ontario-based metals distributor, said union members ratified a contract that covers around 80 employees at five facilities in British Columbia.

The deal, which runs through January 2014, is backdated to early 2009, when Russel's last contract with the USW expired, Britton said. It involves a "small pay increase," she added, declining to provide further details.

"It's always nice to have (negotiations) behind. We usually have good relations with our employee groups," Britton said in an interview with AMM.....
