Century looks to settle labor dispute

Century Aluminum Co. is hoping to settle allegations of unfair labor practices at its Hawesville, Ky., smelter to avoid a confrontation in a federal court that had been slated to hear the matter next week, according to union sources.
Century, which was hit by a complaint from the United Steelworkers (USW) union in August, contacted the National Labor Relations Board and the USW earlier this month in an effort to hash out a deal before Monday's hearing at the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Kentucky, the USW said.
"The company attorneys had made an offer to settle, and that's being taken under advisement and reviewed right now by the Board and the Steelworkers," USW union staff representative Bobby Pierson told AMM.....
