Flat-rolled sheet prices heading for higher ground

Dec 03, 2010 | 01:30 PM |

North American carbon flat-rolled steel producers were charging ahead with a second price increase in the past week, in tandem with gains seen in scrap prices.

Industry sources said Nucor Corp., Charlotte, N.C., and ArcelorMittal USA, Chicago, both moved prices for hot-rolled coil sheet to $640 per ton ($32 per hundredweight), and sources were expecting others to follow.

The mills earlier in the week raised hot-rolled sheet prices to $610 per ton ($30.50 per cwt) from $590 per ton ($29.50 per cwt) on the heels of rising scrap tags and improved demand (AMM, Dec. 1 and Dec. 2).....
