Stainless sheet prices slip as demand remains soft

Seesawing nickel prices and seasonal factors ranging from a typical year-end softening in demand to efforts by distributors to counteract that weakness and trim inventories have combined to shave stainless flat-rolled sheet prices.

"Nobody's buying anything they don't need right now," a Midwestern service center manager told AMM. "People are holding pretty short inventories. (They) are just looking to keep things cleaned up," he said.

An informal survey conducted by AMM put Type 304 stainless sheet at $1.75 per pound, down slightly from $1.77 per pound in mid-November.....
