Scrap veteran calls it a day—sort of

Los Angeles scrap veteran Arnold Berkovics has opted to retire after 37 years in the business, certain he will find distractions elsewhere.
Upon doing so, he put his 51,000-square-foot yard up for sale, shifted focus to his recent interest in precious metals and kept silent about his retirement. A week later, the 56-year-old decided he couldn't stay away from the scrap business and returned as a consultant.
The yard, warehouse, buildings, industrial contract and company—Metal Etc. Inc.—remain up for sale. So why sell his yard? He's tired of being hands on and his daughters don't consider it a "cool" business to continue, so the decision sticks.
When he collects the $5.5 million asking price, the Berkovics family role in Los Angeles' scrap history is certain to end.....
