U.S. Pipe plant running despite strike

U.S. Pipe & Foundry Co. LLC continues to operate and is meeting customer demand despite a labor strike at the Bessemer, Ala.-based large-diameter ductile iron pipe and fittings plant.

Members of the United Steelworkers union continued to strike Friday after rejecting a collective bargaining agreement last week.

The plant and an adjacent mini-mill are operating thanks to workers from other unions, salaried staff and USW members who reported to work despite the strike, a spokesman for parent Mueller Water Products Inc. told AMM.

"We do have a number of Steelworkers that have come to work, so we are operating and we are able to meet our customers' demand," the spokesman said. "And this is traditionally a slow time anyway."....
