Tenn. recyclers awaiting landfill permit

Two Tennessee aluminum recyclers hope to secure a permit to build a 90-acre landfill for salt cakes, despite residents' objections last week at a public hearing.
Mount Pleasant, Tenn.-based Tennessee Aluminum Processors Inc. (TAP) and Smelter Service Corp. have struggled to obtain permits and clearances for their landfill, proposed in July 2008, after residents of the city of Columbia cited environmental concerns. The proposed site is located just outside the city.
Last month, the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) tentatively approved a permit for work to begin on the landfill.
In a customary public hearing organized this week by TDEC, some residents and representatives of environmental agencies expressed a broad range of environmental concerns. ....
