Chevron ordered to shut pipeline after second oil spill

Chevron Corp. has been ordered by U.S. pipeline safety officials to close a nearly 60-year-old oil pipeline following an oil spill in Salt Lake City in early December, the second to flow through the city in six months.
San Ramon, Calif.-based Chevron must "take immediate corrective action" on the 10-inch pipeline that failed on Dec. 1, spilling 500 barrels of crude, U.S. officials said.
In June, the same section of the pipeline failed, leading to 800 barrels of oil leaking into the community and contaminating three waterways.
Chevron's No. 2 Line could be "hazardous to life, property and the environment" unless problems on the pipeline are fixed, according to a corrective action order issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) last week.....
