Essar Algoma eyes layoffs, cites weakness in market

Essar Steel Algoma Inc. is prepared to lay off as much as 12.5 percent of its work force due to weak steel market conditions.

A spokeswoman for the Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario-based company confirmed Monday that as many as 400 of the company's 3,200 employees could be laid off, although she said the company hopes as many cuts as possible will come via attrition and early....
