Novelis looks to shut UK foil business in April

Novelis Inc. outlined plans Tuesday to shut its foil rolling operations in Bridgnorth, England, by the end of April 2011, adding that it might also sell its printed confectionery packaging business at the site.

News of the decision to end foil rolling in the United Kingdom follows a 90-day consultation with the 319 staffers at the Bridgnorth site, which includes five rolling mills producing foil for packaging and technical applications, as well as house foil.

"Despite significant effort by the Bridgnorth team, unfortunately a viable alternative to closure did not emerge for most of the operation," Tadeu Nardocci, president of Novelis Europe and senior vice president of Novelis Inc., said in a statement.....
