Aluminum billet prices drop in ‘blue light’ special

A number of North American aluminum billet producers are moving material at a discount in the final weeks of 2010, but premiums are expected to rebound in the New Year, producer and consumer sources told AMM.
Some primary producers and remelters have dropped their spot premiums by nearly 2 cents per pound in an effort to unload metal before year-end, sources said. According to buyers and sellers in the market, Midwest spot premiums for aluminum billet have fallen to between 9.75 and 10.5 cents per pound due to the discounting, down from between 10.5 and 11.5 cents per pound at this time last month.
"There has been some discounting—some blue light or end-of-the-year specials," one major extrusion source said.....
