HSS producers chase hot-roll coil hikes, raise tags another $40/T

North American manufacturers of hollow structural sections (HSS) are trying to play catch-up with rapidly rising hot-rolled coil prices by implementing price hikes of their own.
But they might not be moving quickly enough, according to steel buyer sources, who expect additional steel sheet price increases—based on their anticipation of a steep increase in ferrous scrap costs—after the first of the year.
Atlas Tube Inc., Harrow, Ontario, took the lead among HSS producers again, telling customers in a letter this week that it plans to immediately boost HSS product prices by $40 per ton ($2 per hundredweight) with all new orders.
Atlas' move was quickly followed by Independence Tube Corp., Chicago, and Welded Tube of Canada Ltd., Concord, Ontario, market sources said, adding that they expected producers throughout the United States to hike prices as well.....
