West Coast flat-rolled orders appear to be gaining strength, with steel producers closing their order books for February after holding them open for barely two weeks.

California Steel Industries Inc. (CSI), Fontana, Calif., has filled its books for February on hot-rolled, cold-rolled and galvanized sheet, while USS-Posco Industries (UPI), Pittsburg, Calif., has done the same on cold-rolled and galvanized product, market sources have been told. Steelscape Inc., Kalama, Wash., also has reportedly closed out February orders on galvanized sheet, they added.

Although some buyers were looking for March orders to open up shortly, as of midweek most reported this process hadn't yet started and the mills weren't expected to begin quoting widely again until the New Year. ....
