Mini-mill pioneer Marvin Selig dies at 87

Marvin Selig, former chairman of the Steel Group of Commercial Metals Co. (CMC) and a seminal figure in creating the modern mini-mill industry, died Monday following a long illness. He was 87.
Selig, who founded the forerunner of what is today the Americas Mills and Americas Fabrication segments of Irving, Texas-based CMC, retired in 2002 after a 55-year career in the steel business.
Originally from Spring Valley, N.Y., he started in 1947 what would eventually become Structural Metals Inc. as a rerolling operation in a cornfield outside Seguin, Texas. He was joined in 1962 by his brother, Clyde Selig, who retired as chief executive officer of the CMC Steel Group in 2006.....
