Scrap processor to fund water study

A Ventura, Calif., scrap processor has settled a lawsuit over stormwater runoff from its yard, going a step further by agreeing to fund an $89,000 study of the nearby Santa Clara River estuary.
Standard Industries and the Wishtoyo Foundation's Ventura Coastkeeper Program announced a settlement that requires Standard to improve its extensive stormwater treatment infrastructure so that stormwater discharges comply with the federal Clean Water Act.
Marty Berkowitz, Standard's operations manager, said in a telephone interview that the company already had a good water retention program in place and has paved over much of the scrapyard. But it has now agreed to install a 70,000-gallon storage tank and reduce the number of water discharge outlets from the yard to one from three, he said.....
