China slashes export quota on rare earths by 11.4 percent

China has cut the first batch of 2011 export quotas on rare earths by 11.4 percent, threatening to deepen a global supply shortfall that has spurred high-tech consumers to seek alternative supplies.

The first round of quotas allocates 14,446 tonnes to 31 companies, according to the Ministry of Commerce's Web site. The first batch of quotas for 2010 amounted to 16,304 tonnes, which was followed by a second batch later in the year of 9,976 tonnes.....
