Purchasing managers bullish on 2011

If purchasing managers in New York and Chicago are a bellwether, then the outlook is bright for economic conditions and manufacturing activity in 2011.

Surveys in the two cities by the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) show businesses are bullish on prospects for this year.

The Chicago business barometer, based on a survey of Chicago members of the ISM, hit 62.4 in January, its highest level since July 1988. Meanwhile, a New York ISM report showed its current business conditions index rising sharply to 71.2 in January from 63.8 in December, while its six-month outlook index soared to 90.7 from 75.1 in the same comparison.....
