RG Steel, USW ink new labor accord

PITTSBURGH It might not go into the books as an overwhelming victory, but the labor contract ratified by union-represented workers of the new RG Steel LLC has already gained a spot as one of the more significant deals in the history of the labor movement.
Members of the United Steelworkers union ratified the new contract by a 57-percent margin. While the vote goes down as a victory, its not a resounding one considering that many workers of RG Steel have been out of a job for more than two years.
Many workers of the former Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Co. that is now part of RG Steel, most of whom remain laid-off indefinitely, voiced opposition when presented with details of the contract over the past month. They felt the deal gave no guarantees of a return to work and said it fell short in terms of wages and benefits compared with similar labor deals negotiated recently by the USW at companies like U.S. Steel Corp., Pittsburgh, and ArcelorMittal USA Inc., Chicago.....
