US manufacturing, defense in critical condition: Gerard

PITTSBURGH — The U.S. manufacturing and defense industries are in critical condition and must be revived in the interest of national security, Leo Gerard, international president of the United Steelworkers union, told the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation.

In comments on behalf of the USW and the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) and its affiliated unions, Gerard called for immediate government action with strategic and employment-linked policies, investments and incentives to revitalize a manufacturing base the USW says lost some 6 million....
