LONDON — China has surpassed Europe as the cost leader in the global stainless steel industry, surging ahead with lower production costs since its development of nickel pig iron (NPI) as a replacement raw material, according to Markus Moll, managing director of Austrian steel consultancy Steel & Metals Market Research GmbH.

"If you look at the worldwide production costs of (stainless steel) producers, you can see where the Chinese producers are. They have substantially lower costs of $600 to $700 per tonne than European mills," he said at the 10th International Stainless and Special Steel Summit in Munich, Germany, organized by AMM sister publication Metal Bulletin. "Most of the cost advantage is coming not from labor but from nickel pig iron. Everyone is talking about it."....
