CHICAGO The United Steelworkers union hopes to persuade Whirlpool Corp. to reverse its decision to close its Fort Smith, Ark., refrigerator plant next year.
The union is trying to schedule meetings with company leaders to discuss opportunities to save the plant from closure. If that effort fails, the union will begin negotiations on a severance program for nearly 1,700 workers, 900 of them active employees.....
