UBC supply tightens; can demand returns

NEW YORK — A pickup in demand for aluminum can body stock after a slight pullback earlier in the year has led to a tightening of supply in the North American used beverage can (UBC) sector, a top Novelis Inc. executive said Wednesday.

"We went through a period post-debt ceiling (debate) where there was a shakiness in consumer confidence. We’ve seen demand stabilize and are seeing some additions to the order book," president and chief executive officer Philip Martens said during the company’s quarterly earnings conference call, adding that Novelis’ shipments of can body stock also were impacted during the quarter because one of its key distributors didn’t repeat a year-earlier promotional campaign.....
