CHICAGO — A proposed tightening in fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions standards could heighten a long-running battle between the steel and aluminum markets in the vehicle manufacturing arena.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Transportation have issued their final proposal to set stronger fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions standards for future passenger cars and light trucks made between 2017 and 2025. If enacted, Americans could save more than $1.7 trillion in fuel costs through a proposed fuel efficiency standard of 54.5 miles per gallon.
But the proposal’s stringent regulations could, in turn, bolster support for lightweight vehicles, thus heightening the steel-aluminum battle.....
