Letter to the editor: Keystone XL project a series of follies

To the editor:

The creativity of Congress in finding projects to waste their precious time on continues to amaze me. Not long ago, the House passed a resolution to reaffirm "In God we trust" as the motto of the United States of America (was there any threat to it?). . . . As reported in AMM, Republicans in the Senate introduced a bill that would force President Obama to approve (not decide on, but approve) the Keystone XL pipeline project within 60 days (AMM, Dec. 1)—something that is certain to fail, or, if it were to pass against expectations, certain to be vetoed.

There are three sets of arguments against this project: environmental—which have been widely discussed—as well as political and economical, which have gotten less coverage. ....
