METAL THEFT - VIEW FROM A MERCHANT: The police must take responsibility

Metal theft in the UK can only be stopped if the police crack down on the country’s unlicensed scrapyards, a large scrap metal merchant tells Metal Bulletin’s Barbara O’Donovan.
The merchant says:
The authorities want recyclers to police themselves to prevent metal theft. I can guarantee you now that that won’t get rid of the rogue element that’s led to the rise in robberies since metal prices increased.
When it comes down to the unlicensed sites in industrial estates, nothing is being done.
The legitimate side of the business, where we operate from, is being targeted instead.
Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act, the police have a right to come on to the property of any licensed scrapyard in the country, but if they want to raid unlicensed scrapyards they need a warrant. ....
