Alpha to pay $209M in Massey mine disaster

NEW YORK — Alpha Natural Resources Inc. has agreed to pay $209 million in connection with the criminal investigation of the explosion that killed 29 miners at the Upper Big Branch metallurgical coal mine in West Virginia in April 2010.

The agreement with the U.S. Justice Department, the largest-ever resolution in a criminal investigation of a mine disaster, addresses only the corporate criminal liability of former owner Massey Energy Co., leaving the door open for potential criminal charges against individuals associated with the disaster.....
