Port of Houston braces for steel growth

HOUSTON — Steel shipments through the Port of Houston are poised to reach 4.4 million tons this year, an increase of at least 60 percent from 2010, and the expansion of the Panama Canal could mean even further growth ahead, according to a port executive.
"We got hit in the downturn of the economy. In 2009, we handled 2.65 million tons (of steel). Now, with all the fracking operations and the pipe rolling in again, we’re seeing new growth," Ricky Kunz, vice president of origination at the Port of Houston Authority (PHA), said in an interview. "From here, that pipe is going into Texas, up into Utah and into Pennsylvania for shale gas."....
