Lawmakers push for revised trade focus

WASHINGTON Lawmakers are recommending accelerated negotiations for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) while focusing on secondary trade barriers, such as state-owned enterprises, as opposed to traditional barriers, such as tariffs and import quotas.
Members of the House trade subcommittee pointed out at a hearing Wednesday the importance of the TPP, which they said would open up the United States to more jobs and to transparent trade with Asian-Pacific nations.
"TPP is a surefire way to create U.S. jobs and expand opportunities for American workers. . . . It will allow American ingenuity to create jobs instead of relying on costly government programs to do so," Rep. Kevin Brady (R., Texas) said. "(But) focusing just on tariffs, import quotas and other traditional barriers to trade is no longer enough to fully open markets." ....
