Gerdau turns attention to N. America SBQ mart

LOS ANGELES — Gerdau Special Steel North America has launched a second expansion and modernization for special bar quality (SBQ) products at its Monroe, Mich., mill while it ponders building a new SBQ plant in North America.

The subsidiary of Brazil’s Gerdau SA will spend $67 million to install a new walking beam reheat furnace and four additional rolling mill stands, in addition to implementing improvements to Monroe’s bar-cooling beds, thermal mechanical cooling systems, control systems, and bundling and packaging systems.....
