November steel imports tumble 13.4%

CHICAGO U.S. steel imports totaled just under 1.84 million tonnes in November, according to preliminary license data, down 13.4 percent from Octobers final count of 2.12 million tonnes but up by a similar percentage from November 2010.
The November imports put the year-to-date total at 23.9 million tonnes, according to U.S. Census Bureau data.
One steel analyst anticipates an increase in imports in the first part of 2012. "We expect to see a pickup . . . in the mid- to late first-quarter timeframe as a result of three factors: pricing, lead times and confidence," Michelle Applebaum, managing partner of Steel Market Intelligence, Chicago, said in a research note. ....
