November steel imports tumble 13.4%

CHICAGO — U.S. steel imports totaled just under 1.84 million tonnes in November, according to preliminary license data, down 13.4 percent from October’s final count of 2.12 million tonnes but up by a similar percentage from November 2010.
The November imports put the year-to-date total at 23.9 million tonnes, according to U.S. Census Bureau data.
One steel analyst anticipates an increase in imports in the first part of 2012. "We expect to see a pickup . . . in the mid- to late first-quarter timeframe as a result of three factors: pricing, lead times and confidence," Michelle Applebaum, managing partner of Steel Market Intelligence, Chicago, said in a research note. ....
