RG Steel lays off 750-plus at Sparrows Point

NEW YORK — More than 750 employees have been laid off at RG Steel LLC’s Sparrows Point, Md., steelmaking complex as the company looks to cut costs in a cash-strapped environment, a source familiar with the operation told AMM Thursday.
"There are over 750 laid off right now. That’s official," the source said, noting that the widespread furlough is largely expected to be temporary.
A spokeswoman for the Sparrows Point-based steelmaker did not respond to requests for comment, but the source said the company hopes to resume finishing in-process inventory in early January. The company has not yet been given the go ahead to resume primary steel production, the source said.....
