Severstal NA to expand tubular reach

HOUSTON Flat-rolled steel producer Severstal North America Inc. is looking to boost its exposure to the growing pipe and tube sector, a company executive told attendees at AMMs fifth annual Steel Tube and Pipe Conference in Houston.
Some 15 percent of Dearborn, Mich.-based Severstal NAs sales currently come from the pipe and tube market, primarily from its Columbus, Miss, mini-mill, which is close to energy plays in the Southeast, according to Greg Goad, general manager of commercial at Severstal Columbus LLC. That compares with distribution, which accounts for the bulk of Severstal NAs sales (36 percent), and automotive (31 percent).
But that 15-percent figure for pipe and tube was from 2011, and Severstal NA plans to increase its participation in the sector in the future, he said, noting that Columbus alone is ultimately expected to have roughly 30 to 32 percent of its order book devoted to pipe and tube.....
