Senators call for trade zone rejections

NEW YORK — Two lawmakers have called on the Commerce Department to reject three foreign-trade subzone requests that they say could hurt U.S. silicon metal producers by giving preferential treatment to Chinese and Russian imports.
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D., N.Y.) asked Commerce to reject three new zoning production license applications that she said would hurt New York-based Globe Specialty Metals Inc.’s business.
"In these tough economic times, protecting domestic manufacturers should be our highest priority," Gillibrand said in a statement accompanying the Feb. 29 letter. "(Commerce) should do everything they can to support (Globe) as part of their mission to keep American businesses innovative at home and competitive abroad."....
