Buyers are rushing to get nickel ore out of Indonesia ahead of a ban on the export of unprocessed ore due to be enforced on May 6.
Nickel cargo ships crowded several Indonesian ports around the key nickel-producing island of Sulawesi last week, sources said.
“Seven ships are docked at Pomalaa in Southeast Sulawesi now, more than the usual two or three ships at one time,” a nickel producer said.
“All seven are loading nickel ores that are to be shipped out by the May 6 deadline,” he said.
In Tolala in South Sulawesi, one ship has turned into a marketplace.
