USW ratifies new contract at Republic Steel

CHICAGO United Steelworkers union members have ratified a new four-year labor agreement with Republic Steel, the final step needed for the company to move forward with its plans to build an $87-million furnace in Lorain, Ohio.
Republic will begin building almost immediately a new electric-arc furnace and associated equipment at its Lorain special bar quality (SBQ) mill.
The new labor agreement, effective through Aug. 15, 2016, covers about 1,800 workers at Republics mills in Canton, Lorain and Massillon, Ohio; its operations in Gary, Ind., and Lackawanna, N.Y.; N&T Railway Co. LLC employees in Canton and Lorain; and Republic Canadian Drawn Inc. employees in Hamilton, Ontario.....
