MB ZINC CONF: Nyrstar expects greater balance in Chinese zinc concs market

Nyrstar expects the ramp-up in Chinese zinc mine output to move the domestic concentrates market towards a balance of supply and demand, gm of commercial operations Maarten De Leeuw said at the Metal Bulletin Zinc and its Market conference in Milan. After aggressive expansion in smelter capacity, China’s demand for imported concentrates has surged in recent years, depressing both spot and benchmark treatment charges. In this year’s annual contract negotiations, miners demanded a decrease in TCs to correspond with declining spot terms, and Nyrstar has now agreed to the benchmark terms of $191 per dry metric tonne at a basis price of $2,000 per tonne set in February, Metal Bulletin understands.
