Domestic chrome ore market more crucial than duties in Indian export curb

Low chrome ore exports from India in recent years result more from the strength of the domestic ferro-chrome market than the government’s efforts to discourage exports by imposing duties, market participants in India told Metal Bulletin.
They were speaking as a fierce debate grips the global chrome market about moves by integrated ferro-chrome smelters in South Africa to have a $100-per-tonne export tax imposed on chrome ore.
On March 16 the Indian government further increased the export duty on chrome ore and concentrates from a flat rate of Rs3,000 per tonne to an ad valorem tariff of 30%, which is expected to make chrome ore exports from the country even less profitable.
