HSS mills boost prices $30/T amid coil gains

TORONTO A number of hollow structural sections (HSS) mills are planning to increase prices by $30 per ton ($1.50 per hundredweight) in a move that has left some HSS buyers puzzled.
Atlas Tube Inc., part of Chicago-based JMC Steel Group Inc., announced in an April 13 letter to customers a minimum price increase of $30 per ton on all HSS shapes through 12 inches square and all HSS rounds up to 20 inches in outside diameter. Orders already on the books will be price-protected for shipments through May 12, but all unconfirmed quotes or contracts will be subject to the increase, it said.
The announcement was followed by Birmingham, Ala.-based Southland Tube Inc.; Independence Tube Corp. and Leavitt Tube Co. LLC, both of Chicago; and Concord, Ontario-based Welded Tube of Canada Ltd., all of which announced price increases of $30 per ton in letters to customers dated Monday.....
