CESCO WEEK WRAP: Stakes as high as ever for copper miners

After a difficult start to the year, copper miners came to Cesco Week in Santiago with a clear message: bringing mine supply online is a risky game, and the stakes are as high as ever.
The challenges copper miners face are not new, but they are looking less surmountable. They will need to spend more to get less copper out of the ground, and they will need to do so using new technology in new territories, often with a shortage of manpower, energy and water.
Falling ore grades, aging mines, discontented workers and cash-hungry governments will continue to threaten their profit margins, and miners were keen to emphasise that fact.
