DRC set to overtake China, Indonesia as world’s biggest tin supplier

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is set to overtake China and Indonesia as the world’s largest tin supplier in five to ten years, sources said on the sidelines of the International Tin Conference in Cape Town, South Africa.
“There is no doubt about it. We are already the biggest supplier in Africa, and the fifth-largest in the world,” John Kanyoni, vice president of the DRC’s Chamber of Mines, said.
“In 2010, we supplied about 6% of the world’s total output. There are still so many untapped resources. Based on the resource estimates, we may hold 50% of the world’s tin reserves,” Kanyoni said.
Congo exported an annual average of 8,560 tpy of tin concentrates between 2007-2011.Tin mining areas include North Kivu, South Kivu, Maniema, and Katanga.
