Two plead guilty in $1M theft

PITTSBURGH — Two men will be sentenced in August after admitting stealing nickel briquettes worth $1 million from a Baltimore warehouse and selling them into the Pittsburgh scrap market.
Gregg Lee Purbaugh and Kenneth Trainum, both of Baltimore, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Maryland to conspiring to transport stolen nickel briquettes, according to a press release issued by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Maryland.
Purbaugh and Trainum opened Bear Creek Warehouse Co. in 2006, according to the press release. Its primary customer was an international mining company that shipped nickel into the United States. The pair began removing nickel from the warehouse and selling it to an unnamed Pittsburgh scrap metal business, which then re-sold the material to Three Rivers Scrap Metal Inc. and other unidentified customers, according to the original complaint.....
