Caterpillar’s North America outlook robust

CHICAGO — Caterpillar Inc. kicked off 2012 with the highest quarterly profit in its history thanks to strong sales of various products in North America and mining equipment sold globally.

The company has raised its 2012 sales forecast for North America and projects even better growth when the construction market eventually recovers, investor relations director Mike DeWalt said during Caterpillar’s quarterly earnings conference call.

Construction equipment sales in North America grew 36 percent in the first quarter, driven by strong replacement buying after several years of weak sales. ....
