Ford upbeat on N. America performance

CHICAGO — Despite better-than-expected performance overseas, Ford Motor Co. experienced plummeting sales in Europe during the first quarter as well as increasing sluggishness in Asia sales, but the automaker’s performance in North America led the company in dramatic fashion.

Ford’s net income totaled nearly $1.4 billion in the first quarter, down 46 percent from $2.6 billion in the same period last year. "Lower wholesale volumes (vehicles sold), reflecting weaker economic conditions in Europe, contributed to the decline from a year ago," president and chief executive officer Alan Mulally said Friday during the automaker’s earnings conference call.....
