Xstrata's nickel, lead production volumes rise

Xstratas ferro-nickel, mined nickel and lead production volumes all rose in the first quarter of 2012 from the corresponding period last year, as mined copper output fell, the company said.
Total mined nickel production totalled 14,677 tonnes in the first quarter, up from 14,419 tonnes in the corresponding period of 2011, driven by higher volumes at the Raglan and Sudbury mines in Canada
Xstrata produced 26,381 tonnes of nickel overall in the first three months of 2012, an increase of 8% year-on-year, following improved mine production at its integrated nickel operations (INO) and Falcondo operation.
Total mined ferro-nickel production increased to 3,576 tonnes during the quarter, from 1,894 in the first three months of 2011, on an 89% increase at the Falcondo operation in the Dominican Republic.
Lead-in-concentrate production rose to 57,643 tonnes from 53,764, tonnes in the prior-year period, while lead metal production was up at 59,260 tonnes from 51,777 tonnes. ....
