Novelis’ non-can scrap push tightens margins

NEW YORK — Novelis Inc. is pleased with its progress in buying more non-can aluminum scrap, although some scrap buyers say the company’s push has tightened margins on some items to "ridiculous levels."

Novelis vice president of global recycling Derek Prichett told AMM this week that the Atlanta-based company has been targeting scrap from the building and construction, electrical and cable, lithographic, transportation and foil scrap markets.

It has been targeting particularly 3000- and 5000-series alloys from the building scrap sector, Prichett said, and it also is buying extrusion packages and old painted sheet aluminum.....
