Stainless price hikes not firm, distributors say

NEW YORK — Flat-rolled stainless steel prices are said to be "all over the board," with mills sticking to a recent price increase on smaller volumes but discounting larger volumes to certain customers.

"The party line is that they’re holding. But really it’s all over the board," one Midwest service center manager said, adding that while one domestic mill recently rolled over a large contract at a price level that did not reflect the increase, it stuck to the higher tags on a smaller spot purchase. "(That purchase) reflected the price increase," he said. ....
