Century, utility talks fail; PSC to decide rate

NEW YORK — Century Aluminum Co., after failing to reach an agreement with its local power provider, has submitted an application to the Public Service Commission (PSC) of West Virginia requesting a power contract that would protect its idled Ravenswood smelter during periods of weak London Metal Exchange pricing.
"We reached a point where we realized we couldn’t come to a satisfactory resolution. We were too different in what we were hoping to achieve," a spokeswoman for Appalachian Power Co. told AMM. "We’re still working with Century and will continue to do so."
A spokeswoman for the Monterey, Calif.-based aluminum producer confirmed that the parties were unable to reach an agreement, but called the discussions "productive."....
