Century, utility talks fail; PSC to decide rate

NEW YORK Century Aluminum Co., after failing to reach an agreement with its local power provider, has submitted an application to the Public Service Commission (PSC) of West Virginia requesting a power contract that would protect its idled Ravenswood smelter during periods of weak London Metal Exchange pricing.
"We reached a point where we realized we couldnt come to a satisfactory resolution. We were too different in what we were hoping to achieve," a spokeswoman for Appalachian Power Co. told AMM. "Were still working with Century and will continue to do so."
A spokeswoman for the Monterey, Calif.-based aluminum producer confirmed that the parties were unable to reach an agreement, but called the discussions "productive."....
