Gerdau optimistic, but wary of rod imports

DALLAS A host of indicators appear to be signaling better times for the U.S. wire rod market but imports remain a concern, according to an executive at a domestic wire rod producer.
"Were not close to where we were before, from a consumption standpoint," said Jim Kerkvliet, vice president of sales and marketing at Tampa, Fla.-based Gerdau Long Steel North America, part of Brazilian steelmaker Gerdau SA. "But things are getting better. . . . Weve come off the bottom and were moving toward a more stable, steady, slow growth rate."....
