Demand for stainless long products cooling

NEW YORK — Domestic demand for stainless long products has dropped in recent weeks as falling surcharges and a poorer economic outlook have led consumers to delay large purchases.

"They buy what they need, but they don’t place that big (of a) buy," an East Coast service center source said.

A second East Coast distributor source agreed. "In the last four to five weeks, things have slowed down significantly. At this point, everybody’s looking for a deal," he said, noting that the smaller, just-in-time buys have made business more difficult. ....
